Green Works De-thatcher Can Improve Lawn – For A Fraction of the Cost of a Professional Landscaper!

 on October 5, 2016

After receiving a professional landscaping estimate to repair my lawn for $8,000, I decided to become my own landscaper. I purchased the Green Works 27022 Corded De-thatcher after reading Amazon reviews. (One reviewer mentioned using the recommended heavy duty extension cord, so I purchased that too). I used the Green Works De-thatcher on the entire yard – a total of 4 times (yard is about 100’x110′). I filled 2-96 gallon yard waste containers and 12 Kraft bags (about 32 gallons each) with the debris. Then, my husband and I filled all the old mole holes and tunnel dips with 4 cubic yards of top soil. Next, we spread grass seed on the bare spots, and spread 5 cubic yards of compost over the entire yard. Finally the lawn was well watered. Photos show the results. It isn’t the $8,000 professional lawn, but it has been significantly improved for $500 and a lot of hard work.

Brilliant! Pays for itself in 1st use. Perfect for overseeding!

After realizing that dense thatch was likely the cause of my stunted grass’ health, I decided to buy this machine. I leave the clippings on my grass, which likely caused TOO MUCH thatch. At first you’ll think that $150 is too much money to spend, but if you are spending $400 a year on TruGreen or even $200 on DIY fertilizers, and you aren’t dealing with the thatch, eventually your grass’ health will plateau.

Love this!

This is my new favorite yard toy! I bought it primarily for all the moss in my lawn and it works fantastically well! I’ve already worked over 12,000sf. It’s light and really easy to use.

Great product so far. Fix the instructions!

This dethatcher did a great job with pulling up the thatch without any issues. Functionally, it’s great. The instructions set you up for failure. 1. Instead of having you install the cord holder first like it should, it tells mentions this after you’ve assembled the whole this. Now I have to disassemble, install cord holder, and reassemble. 2. It tells you that in order to travel with the dethacher you should set the wheels to level “I”. This is the lowest level and will cause the splines to make full contact and bend your splines. Level “III” is the setting that it needs to be on in order for the wheels to give the dethacher a lift and minimize spline contact with the floor. So the instructions were backwards with this stuff and I couldn’t believe it really. I looked at it back and forth several times just to make sure.

It really works well – I was surprised

Edit/Update: Wow it has been 5 years already that I have owned this. I use it twice a year – once in late summer/early fall, and next in spring. I use it with every other row of tines removed (as shown in my photos). I only go over my Floratam lawn in one direction per dethatching. I found that if you pull the machine backwards while the tines are spinning and in contact with the ground, you will eventually break the tines. It is so much easier to pull in back as you would a mower as you make turns, etc., but the tines don’t like that. I made an effort to avoid that altoghether, and have not experienced one broken tines since.

My favorite new tool! Surprisingly effective!!!

I was prepared to rent a dethatcher from Home depot for about $70/day until I found this machine for a little over $100. I now own my own machine which is easily stored in the garage/basement, and I can pull it out once a year with no maintenance because it uses an electric motor.

I’d give this product 10 stars if I could

So I typed into Amazon ‘dethatcher’ thinking we would get the dethatcher rake. The neighbor owns one & I thought if my husband and I each had one we could get the yard done even quicker. However, I came across this gadget. At first I thought no way am I spending over a $100 on a tool I’ll probably only use in the fall and what if it sucks? But then I saw the reviews and figured over 500 of my fellow Amazon shopper can’t be lying. So out of desperation to save time and back breaking work we bought it.

Sweet Machine- works GREAT!

UPS dropped it off, I had it assembled in 10 minutes, and gave it a test run in the backyard- WOW! It’s been eight years since we sodded the yard and It Is Time to dethatch! Looking forward to using it this weekend. I’m confident it will do a great job! Great purchase!!! And please read the helpful reviews- there’s a lot of helpful tips and advice about this great little machine.

This thing is great. I have used this on a small 8 x 20 lawn and a larger lawn like the one in the picture and this does a good job. It took me a while to get all the moss off my lawn but not too long and my back was not hurting from pulling up all that moss with a rake. I like how they give you extra “blades” and the wheel height is adjustable. My lawn is greener and coming back to life.
